Does God speak in dreams? A Testimony.

“In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.  Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.”  Acts: 2:17-18

I have a testimony and I can hardly wait to share it with you!  In April or May of 2010 I had one of those God dreams that you can’t escape.  It went like this:

I am riding in the backseat of either Bill (my boss) or Brad’s (co-worker) black Volvo.  We are riding across the top of a grassy hill when the car stops and they get out.  As they do the car starts to head down a grassy hill, out of control.  Shockingly, I am not afraid!  The car then stops or gets stuck so, I climb out of the sunroof thinking, “I can do this!”, as I climb out, I begin flying up into the sky.  As I fly up higher I see rows and rows of wooden doors side-by-side, row-by-row.  I am flying up and down looking at all of them.  Then I wake up!

While I didn’t understand the dream at the time I knew it had God’s handiwork all over it.  It was painted on my spirit as real as the air I breathe.  I wrote it down in my journal and I waited…  Time passed and in the fall of that year I had an encounter with the Lord that lead me to resigning my job (for those that have read my “about page”, I won’t rehash the details here).  Following that encounter, and my ensuing “yes” to his mysterious call, I began to receive revelation about things that I had seen in either a vision or a dream prior to this.  The dream I shared was one such piece of revelation.  I knew, in a moment, approximately 6 months later that this dream represented my leaving my job.  I also knew that as I did leave the Lord was going to lead me, by his Spirit, into a season where there would be a lot of God opportunities.  This message wrapped in a mystery was a confirming sign to me.

So you went flying in the sky, huh, Jennifer? Why are you telling us this?  Glad you asked!  While I had shared the dream and its interpretation with a select few who were journeying with me at the time (you know that whole, “wisdom is found in a multitude of counselors” thing in Proverbs, right?!).  I had not had anyone actually interpret the dream FOR me.  Now, fast-forward to my Understanding Dreams and Visions class last weekend (over six years later).  I decided that I should present this exact dream to my students. I gave them no details other than the dream itself.  In other words, they didn’t know the dream was even about me.  What I watched happen was astounding!  My heart began thudding in my chest as I watched the class listen to the Spirit of God speak to them about the dream.  They began to throw out things like, “transition”, “leaving financial security and safety”, “following Jesus”, “doors of opportunity” and more…  It was absolutely magnificent and glorious!  A room full of people, eager both to understand and interpret God’s heavenly language began interpreting a dream they knew nothing about nor who it was for!   My own faith was inspired as I watched heaven come to earth through his people!

Proverbs 25:2 tells us, “It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings.”  I like what my NIV study Bible says in regards to this scripture, “God has chosen not to reveal all things clearly.  He has left much concealed beneath a surface that only those who pursue him diligently will discover.”  That scripture also tells me that our diligent search will make us king-like or queen-like.   I’m definitely on board with that!

You see, the Lord himself knows what we need in order to carry out the instruction he gives us.  He alone knows what we need in order to execute faithful obedience and to head in the direction of our destines; therefore, leading us into spiritual inheritance.  What role dreams and visions played in shaping my future was undeniable.  Had I not written down what I had been shown and waited on God’s timing and revelation I would likely not be sitting here writing this article.  I write this to inspire you and to encourage you to pay attention to what God is showing you.  God alone knows what we need and he knows how to communicate with us in a way that will allow for full obedience in our lives, if, we are willing to respond to him.  Dreams and visions were confirming signs to me of God’s word.  They produced a faith in me that didn’t allow my flesh to consider any other options.  As I was about to take a leap off the ledge of safety and security fear was unable to take a foothold.  It wasn’t a controller of my choices; it was allowed no place of influence.

Whether or not you consider yourself to be a symbolic person, a person who speaks metaphorically or poetically isn’t the point.  What matters is what God says about you.  If we are the son’s and daughter’s of the God of heaven who knows all things from beginning to end, who changes times and season and sets up kings and disposes of them (see Daniel 2) then I am going to vote that we should expect, NO, we should come into full agreement that we also have the DNA of our father in heaven.  We should expect that the promise of the Father regarding the coming Holy Spirit is for all of us.  His word says that his Spirit would be poured out on all flesh (you and me) and that some signs would be prophecy, see visions and dreaming dreams (Joel 2, Acts 2).  He never promised that we would understand right away, but he did promise to never leave us or forsake us (Deut 31:6), and that he would give us all things that lead to life a godliness (2 Peter 1:3).  That His Spirit would lead us and guide us into all truth.  We need to get into a place of belief that says, “Holy Spirit, I desire to know you, be led by your Spirit in fellowship and relationship you.”  He longs for communion and conversation with you!

I challenge you to go deeper, to make time to hear his voice and, perhaps, start learning this new heavenly language.  It is, quite simply, the most important language you will EVER learn!  Ask him to open it up to you and ask him to reveal himself to you through his word and through his Spirit.  “For those who are led by the Spirit of God, these are the children of God”, (Romans 8:14).  Today, I am praying that the windows of heaven would be opened over you!  Now, I leave you with this… two of the written interpretations that came from the class.  I couldn’t possibly have included them all here, but one just didn’t seem like enough!

1.    “God is about to bring you a transition in your career.  As you look to Him, He will give you peace and open up doors of opportunity.”

2.    “Change is coming, probably related to your career.  It may feel like you are going backwards,       but look up to Jesus.  He will lead you to the next door (career, job), probably a promotion.

OK…OK… one more….

3.    “You leave job security and wealth for a journey that will lead you to
windows (doors) of opportunities that will rise in you going places.”

“For God may speak in one way, or in another, yet man does not perceive it.  In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls upon men, while slumbering on their beds, then He opens the ears of men, and seals their instruction.”  Job 33: 14-16
